Go to Global Forest Watch http:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \/\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.globalforestwatch.org\/<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<i>(*Note, don\u2019t go to the Canadian site for the interactive map, though there are lots of interesting documents there that are worth downloading and reading carefully.\u00a0 But the interactive map is on the international website<\/i>.)<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">2. Choose GFW Interactive Map<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">3. On the map legend called \u201cForest Change\u201d, click\u00a0\u201ctree cover loss\u201d\u00a0only.\u00a0 (It\u2019s too confusing to include\u00a0\u201ctree cover gain\u201d, and besides we know in NS this would constitute the pathetic shrubby forest growth that covers the landscape after a clearcut and does not provide the same ecosystem services as do the intact\/mature forests that were removed.)\u00a0 You can also play with canopy density in the legend.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t decided on what is the best percentage to show.\u00a0 The default is 30 %.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">4. Zoom to the area you want to see.\u00a0 (Choose Canada as Country data on the right hand legend that pops up.)<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">5. The sliding time scale bar\u00a0can\u00a0be stopped and you can take a screen shot anywhere.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">6. You can also play with base map layers on the right hand legend.\u00a0 I\u2019d encourage this.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">7. When you have images you like simply choose the \u201cprint screen command\u201d\u00a0<u>on your key board<\/u>.\u00a0 (Most keyboards have a key somewhere in the very top row of your keyboard that says \u201cprint screen\u201d\u00a0or \u201cPrtScn\u201d.\u00a0 Press it with \u201cshift\u201d key or \u201ccontrol\u201d key.\u00a0 There you go!\u00a0 Paste it into your power point!\u00a0 Choose two different time periods and you have a nifty comparison.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-783136720809366887611timesoutdent\">Obtaining images this way runs the risk of losing some resolution, so try to zoom in as close as you can to what you want to show.\u00a0 You can always crop the photo a little afterwards to clean up the image.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donna Crossland gave a TREPA presentation on November 25th in Yarmouth.
