{"id":2105,"date":"2019-02-10T12:27:44","date_gmt":"2019-02-10T15:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trepa.org\/?p=2105"},"modified":"2019-03-11T14:54:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T17:54:40","slug":"minutes-of-february-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.trepa.org\/?p=2105","title":{"rendered":"Minutes of February meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These are as written but yet to be approved minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>TREPA Minutes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Feb. 6, 2019<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The meeting of the Board of Directors of TREPA Jan. 6, 2018, at 7:05 P.M. at Beacon Church location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Present-BarrieMacGregor, John Sollows, Jennifer Cunningham, Mike Raynard, John Morris, Jean Cleveland, Debbie Sullivan, John Kearney, Dan Earle, Larry Deveau, Roy Fudge, Dianne Klomp and Ginny Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Regrets: John Linder, and Eko Raharjo<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Approve Agenda-Approved after additions \u2013three additions Barrie( AGM\/Tickets) and Debra-Lifestyles).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Approved January minutes Moved by John M. and 2<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>nd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> by Mike R.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Treasurer\u2019s Report- Dianne gave a report in summary: received $80.00 in donations, $500 in stipends, (Balance at this time $1099). A check will be sent to Joint Stocks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Barrie asked that a year to date column be added to the report as well as an end of the fiscal year summary and the annual budget.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Moved by Dianne to approve treasurer\u2019s report, 2<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>nd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> by Roy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>OLD BUSINESS:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">Water quality- <b>John S<\/b> is working on completing the water quality reports for 2018.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In general he notes that colour is down which seem to be related to lower amounts of rain fall in June and July.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This will make the lakes more vulnerable to blooms.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Blue \u2013green algal data are helpful in terms of species composition<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>but the absolute numbers are approximate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 2. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Received $650 from Adopt a Stream, Dec.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>17. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 3.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Op Eds- None to date<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 4. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>During the past month <b>John S has <\/b>had about numerous funding applications to fill out. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Three students were requested from Canada Summer Jobs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Two of them<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to work under the auspices of Clean Foundation, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>one as a regular TREPA summer student employee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Clean students would work primarily to support the Eco Action project, and a separate application also had to be sent to Clean.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Supplementary funding (40% of the salaries) was also requested from<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nova Scotia summer Skills program.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In general there were too many uncertainties with this process, and it needs to be improved in another year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 5.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Shoreline Buffer Issues-The Eco Action project should make a difference in the distribution of information- if we get the grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 6. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Boomerang Bags project has been launched at the Killam building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We have learned that Dollarama is selling cloth bags as is Staples.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of which is a good sign that businesses are starting to support the end of one -time use plastic bags<b>. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Barrie<\/b> said he would take a few bags to give away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>John offered more material.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We will be giving bags to retailers who do not have their own bags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 7. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Leslie Farrow may be willing to join us at our AGM.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>John S<\/b> will contact.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>See below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 8. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>DFO- John has not heard back from Shana as of yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Charlene LeBlanc would be willing to cooperate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 9. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Objectives-discussion- We seem to be acting on our objectives but they also appear to be the ones that were least popular at the time of the vote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Barrie <\/b>will ask Derek Lesser if he has any suggestions on reaching high school students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of our goals is to include more students in our activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>NEW BUSINESS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 1. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Property Tax Assessment-Our property assessments are the same as inpast years<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>so we will not be contesting the amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Naomi Goldberg from Nature Canada has asked us to write the Prime Minister to help protect 17% of Canada\u2019s crown land especially areas where the environment is key to the survival of multiple species at risk. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was agreed that a formulated letter from Nature Canada will be sent to Prime Minister Trudeau. <b>John S<\/b>. A brief history of the organization was provided by <b>John K<\/b>. in an e-mail to members after the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 3. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hemlock Wooly Aldegid- Discussions ensued on how to record information about a sighting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Re: Using Cameras, recording longitude and latitude and other information about location).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was also suggested that we make note of areas where there are hemlocks that are not affected by the HWA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 4. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lobster draw-<b>John S<\/b>. will circulate the page of tickets. The draw will be May 25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> 5.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>John S. sent<\/b> a letter to the municipal council regarding a business in Dayton.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>John S will follow up with John Cunningham.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Apparently the building itself is legally situated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At some point all such facilities should be located in the industrial park. However, there are other concerns regarding a near by business site which has been sold for other purposes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A representative from the Department of Environment told John S. that they would respond if the business became a problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Barrie suggested that we wait until next month to see if we do get a response from a council representative. It was suggested that a visit might be paid to the owners of both sites about TREPA\u2019s concerns . <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Others thought it would not be advisable to speak to owners.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was decided that we should go through official channels.t The Municipality can change their list of permitted uses without changing zoning laws.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>Barrie<\/b> will get a copy of the by-laws and see how they apply to this situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">6.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Bills-Workers Com. (Just gets filed for now).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dianne has a bill from Registered of Joint Stocks and will pay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">7.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>AGM-The meeting usually falls in the middle of April,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013the 17<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> is the date this year, at the Fire Hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Leslie Farrow, of Kesputwitk<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Conservation Collaborative will be asked to speak. <b>John S<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">8.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Life style show- May 3-5-Do we want to have a table?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is there a special rate for not for profit organizations?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><b>Debbie Sullivan<\/b> will try to get a table<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>in conjunction with Clean Foundation: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"mailto:info@clean.ns\"><span class=\"s3\">info@clean.ns<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">9.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dan asked that everyone go on the TREPA sight become aware of new posts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Anyone who does register will get a reply from <b>Dan.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">10.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>NS Power is going ahead with the Tusket Damn rebuild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">11.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The meeting with the Annapolis Clean Water (CARP) group on Stormwater will be March 12, 6:30-7:30 at the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Next Meeting March<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>6, 2019, Beacon Street, <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These are as written but yet to be approved minutes.
