Living Shorelines Workshop

Living Shorelines: An Applied Workshop on Coastal Erosion

The Ecology Action Centre invites you to attend “Living Shorelines: An Applied Workshop on Coastal Erosion” on March 18th in Truro, Nova Scotia. This practical workshop is intended to help practitioners (contractors, landscapers, coastal land owners, planners, and regulatory agencies, municipal staff and councilors) learn new approaches to managing coastal erosion. The workshop will be geared towards conditions along Nova Scotia’ s Northumberland shore, however, participants working or living in other parts of the province will find the workshop relevant.

As the rate of coastal change increase in many parts of Nova Scotia’s coasts, landowners, municipalities, and government agencies are facing difficult decisions on how to best manage these changes. This workshop will explore alternative ‘Living Shorelines’ approaches to managing erosion that are being used locally and elsewhere in North America. Living Shorelines approaches use a range of techniques to stabilize coastal features, while maintaining natural shoreline processes, and wildlife habitat. Living Shorelines relies heavily on re-establishing vegetation cover, and working with natural materials found on site.

Workshop topics will include:

· Coastal processes in the Northumberland Strait
· Climate change projections for the area
· Current use and impacts of shoreline hardening approaches
· Living Shorelines principles and approaches
· Living Shorelines case studies

Keynote speaker Kevin Smith (Riparian & Wetland Restoration Services, Maryland Department of Natural Resources) will share his expertise on how to implement Living Shorelines approaches to protect property while retaining the dynamic nature, habitat features and natural processes of the coast.

The workshop will be held at the Best Western Hotel in Truro, from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm on Monday, March 18th, 2013. There is a small registration fee of $35 that will include the cost of snacks in the morning and afternoon, as well as a hearty lunch. Please register online at https://www.ecologyaction.ca/livingshorelines before March 4th, as workshop space is limited.

The Ecology Action Centre has worked towards sustainability for Nova Scotia’s communities and environment for 40 years with a reputation of offering well–researched, cost-effective, solutions to environmental challenges facing Nova Scotia’s communities. Funding for this workshop has been generously provided by Environment Canada’s EcoAction Fund, Nova Scotia Environment and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.
