Coastal/Oceans MOU signed

A memorandum of understanding between the province and the government of Canada will improve management and protection of Nova Scotia’s coastal and ocean resources.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau and federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea signed the Canada-Nova Scotia Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management Memorandum of Understanding to stress the need for collaboration.

“The province and government of Canada have been working side by side for many years to maintain healthy coasts and oceans,” said Mr. Belliveau. “As our coastal areas face challenges and pressures, we need to work even more closely to ensure a co-ordinated and strategic approach.”

This agreement will set the stage for federal and provincial agencies to work together more effectively on ocean and coastal management issues.

The agreement will focus on: implementing Nova Scotia’s future coastal strategy; integrating coastal and oceans management and planning; managing and sharing information relevant to coastal management and planning; and developing a network to advance coastal research in Nova Scotia.

Musical instruments created from "trash"

For those of you who have children or grand-children that you would like to engage in an imaginative, engaging and environmental theme activity please take part in the upcoming workshops on April 9th and 10th at the AGNS in Yarmouth. The Yarmouth Art Society, Waste Check, Rochelle Pyne on inspripation and Emily Chisom on trombone work with children who create and play their own musical instruments from “trash” materials. They will also be creating their own fashion statements so it should be quite a show.  It is very suitable for young boys, as well as girls, as many of the instruments created are drums, rattles and other potentially energetically expressive modes of music.

Registration required call 749 2248 or email agnsyarmouth@gov.ns.ca

These workshops are being held in conjunction with the April 16th EarthDay Celebrations.

The Green Interview – in depth environmental commentary

Looking for a path to reading about, listening and responding to pertinent environmental issues?  The Green Interview, a site hosted by Silver Donald Cameron, is a place for our TREPA members and supporters to visit.

A visit to the site will tell you:

The Green Interview is a subscription web site of extended interviews – normally about an hour in length – between Silver Donald Cameron and the thinkers, writers and observers whose ideas and perceptions are leading the way to a new era of sustainability. Most interviews (but not all) are on video, with the audio tracks available separately for subscribers to download as MP3 files.

The site includes a forum where subscribers can discuss the interviews among themselves, and sometimes with the interviewees. When an interview has been booked but not yet recorded, members of the forum can suggest questions to be asked.

As a subscription site, The Green Interview  essentially divides its viewers into visitors and members. Visitors are welcome to view the site, read the posted biographies of interviewees, view short segments of the interviews (which will also be posted on YouTube), and read the comments in the forum. Access to the full-length interviews, either by streaming or download, is reserved for paid-up members. Paid members also have complete access to the archive of interviews and the right to participate actively in the forum.

Just for a start you can enjoy interviews with such well known environmentalists as William Rees, James Lovelock, Elizabeth May and Farley Mowat, and many others. Silver Donald’s weekly columns are also posted and archived. Click on the green interview .com logo above to get the full story, visit or subscribe.
